Plague of 2012 lingers…..

Neither myself nor my family have been the picture of health or fitness the last week so I don’t have much to show on my “Healthy Living Blog”…..but I thought I would check in anyway.

I have gotten out of the house twice this week!  WHO HOO!!!!!  Aidan was doing very well for a few days and then on Thursday morning and evening we had a couple more episodes……Sad smile  So……yeah.  He seems to be doing well since then but I am still being cautious.  Poor Jeremy is better but not 100%.  He had to go back to work today and has been hating life.

Saturday I decided to take Luke to eat and to Barnes & Noble at the mall.  There were a few sales I wanted to check out too.  Even though I HATE crowds, it was really nice to be out!  Goodness, can you say cabin fever?  It didn’t take long to be ready to come back home but at least I felt like being home again!

This was the first time I had gotten myself out of sweatpants since last last Saturday (as in the 22nd) …. No need to dress up to watch movies, organized & clean your house a thousand times, catch up on the DVR and read……

A beautiful cross necklace that was in a BACKPACK on that adorable bear!  I think I liked the bear as much as the necklace!  I may or may not have been cuddling with that bear at night.  In love  There were also some Godiva chocolates he was holding.  Those are in the freezer awaiting the return of my appetite.  You know its bad when you don’t even want Godiva!

Needing a Challenge

I woke up this morning…..famished!  I seriously could have eaten breakfast at 5am.  I had my coffee and that held me over for a few hours.

First, around 7am, I ate an orange along with my L-Carnitine/Raspberry Ketones.

Then it looked like I was way ahead of schedule and would be able to make it to the gym super early. So at about 7:30 I ate a small breakfast of 1/2 a bagel thin with 1 tbsp. peanut butter, 1/2 a banana and cinnamon sprinkled on top.

I gave it about an hour to digest as I felt my motivation and energy level waning…..I went to bed way late last night because I was up reading Catching Fire.  I know better than this. All I wanted to do was go back to bed and or eat something else.  I was soooo hungry!  I decided I would have something else to eat and give it another hour before I dragged my lazy bum to the gym.

8:30 – Dannon Traditional Greek yogurt in strawberry, 14 almonds, 1/4 cup Cinnamon Honey Bunches of Oats and 2 tbsp. homemade granola.  Finally….not hungry anymore.

After about an hour I finally made it to the gym.

Workout

Most of the time after two days of rest, it’s easy for me to go to workout.  I am ready for it.   I start to feel gross and lazy after two days.  But there are sometimes when it’s not easy at all.  If I didn’t know better, it would be the beginning of falling off the Healthy Living Wagon.  Something came to me this morning as I was begrudgingly putting on my running shoes.

“Amanda, not working out is not an option for you.”

I don’t know where it came from, maybe it was divine, but it was one of those moments that just really lit the fire under me.  It’s really not an option for me.  I have to workout.  I have to workout for my mental health, for my physical health, for my kids, for my husband, for me.  I do LOVE working out, but I know that it would be so easy for me to just stop.  It’s not an option.  I can’t go back to living the way I was living over two years ago.

When I got there and got started I had a great workout.  Not surprisingly.  Isn’t that how it always happens?  As I was yet again running on the treadmill, I realized that I am getting very bored with my workouts lately.  Even though they have been really great, I don’t look forward to my gym workouts the way I used to. What I really wanted to do this morning was Bob’s workout because it has been such a challenge, or just SOMETHING new.  I even thought about taking Aidan to the park and doing something fun there.  But, part of working out for me is to be able to give myself a mental break & give my Mommy Brain a break.  A break from constant questions, constant re-directing, constant noise.  I started thinking I need a change and new challenge.  So I am going to step out of my comfort zone and start taking advantage of all the group exercise classes at my gym. Something that is funny to me is that I have a slight disdain for the group classes. When there are too many going on at once, I can not find a parking spot and sometimes we have to wait for a spot in the KidZone.  Well, if you can’t beat them, join them!   I have really been wanting to try a Spin Class.  They come out of that class drenched in sweat.  When Luke is out of school I am going to start going back to Bodypump.  I had to stop going because the classes are at 5 and 6 pm.  Which for me is too late.  I may get brave and try the Bootcamp.  I don't know smile  All I know is I have to do something to avoid complete burnout.

I felt pretty good after my workout but like I had completely phoned it in because I was bored.  I ran for the entire 30 min again, and then did two sets of my usual shoulder workout and 2 sets of 15 bicep curls, both with 8lb weights. Then I did 20 full push-ups.  I skipped all the other stuff I usually do because, you guessed it….bored.

My three breakfasts this morning did a great job of holding me over until almost 3pm!  I finally got hungry again and had an apple, & two pieces of the protein bread I made yesterday.

I’m not sure what’s for dinner.  I think Morningstar Corndogs and Annie’s Mac-N-Cheese for Aidan.  Luke had a party after school complete with pizza and cookies, so fruit for him Winking smile

It was another bowl of roasted veggies & 1 cup of Archer Farms Coconut Cashew Basmati rice for me.

I need to find some more “New Recipes” for this week.  Hopefully I can actually find some instead of looking for hours only to have found nothing and be starving for cake!

An “Ordinary Day” Date

I felt it was a good idea to go to the grocery store yesterday with a little snack in my belly. Otherwise, I’m sure the M&M trail mix and Popchips would have ended up in my basket, a definite NO NO in this house. Because Mommy has food issues….my poor children. I hope to God that I am teaching them good eating habits and not dooming them to a life of healthy food rebellion.

My “snack” was in reality an early dinner because I was really hungry at the time and I also knew I would be gone for a while. Well past dinner time. A little 150 calorie snack was not going to keep me satisfied for the long haul.

Dannon fat-free yogurt (I can’t find traditional anymore Thumbs down), 7 Blue Diamond natural almonds, 1/4 cup Honey Bunches of Oats, & 1 piece of cinnamon swirl protein bread.

When I got home from grocery shopping I was a little hungry so I toasted 1/2 a Thomas Whole Wheat Bagel Thin with 1 tbsp. Sunbutter. I also had a few handfuls of Great Grains Cereal in Banana Nut Crunch (just purchased from the store & I think may be my new favorite, just have to try to practice portion control) and ~ 10 peanuts.

Today’s Breakfast

1/2 Thomas Whole Wheat Bagel Thin, 1 tbsp. Sunbutter, 1/2 large banana, sprinkle of cinnamon & Chobani 2% Strawberry Banana Greek Yogurt.

Thursday is our “Date Day”. We usually do something out of the ordinary but today we just enjoyed a normal day…..WITHOUT kids. Which is a “date” in itself. It was so nice to have a conversation with with no interruptions. A lot of time we just give up talking to each other because we can’t even finish a sentence. That’s why “Date Day” is so sacred to us! Next week is Aidan’s last week of school so we have just one more date left before the summer. Next year he will start Kindergarten which means we will have several opportunities to date. Looking way forward to that! Times they are a changin!

For our “date” today we went to the gym and I had yet ANOTHER fantastic workout. I really felt like I could have ran some more when I got home. I even suggested to Jeremy that we do Jillian (TWSS) but quickly dismissed that idea! I ran on the treadmill for 30 min, topping out at 6.0 mph again! (YAY!) and then did a version of my at-home upper body workout. I did the shoulder workout, 3 sets of 15 bicep curls w/ 8lb free weights then 3 sets of 25 bench dips.

I love these, they are so yummy. They have mild sweet and nutty taste that really complimented the turkey cheese combination.

I am finding myself having a daily Spark instead of a weekly Spark. It is making all the difference in my energy levels through the afternoon. Today my Spark lady gave me a sample of the pink lemonade. It was ok, but the mandarin orange is my favorite of them all.

Nursing a Holiday Hangover

I was SO tired yesterday.  I am sure it was a combination of less than stellar eating, lack of exercise, Mrs. Murphy’s pending visitation and a lack of sleep.  I was really hungry all day too but I think I did a pretty good job of choosing the right foods and keeping in touch with my hunger levels.  I ended up getting so caught up in getting caught up, that I never did get a workout in.  I also felt like I really needed a day to chill out and do things for my soul & mind instead of my body.  Even though they tend to go hand in hand.  Hopefully my energy levels will increase through the week and I will start to feel more like myself again soon.

I started the day with coffee and my oatmeal at about 8am and then I drank 3 24oz cups of water through the morning. That felt good. I could tell I was dehydrated. Then I got started on the house work that went by the wayside over the weekend.

1/2 a banana and 1/4 cup peanuts

We had 8 bananas that were ready to eat but I knew we wouldn’t eat all those in the next few days so I took 5 of them, cut them into pieces, put them in plastic baggies and put them in the freezer for smoothies or future baking.  I remember the first time I tried to freeze a banana.  I just put it in the freezer, peel and all and then when I took it out to use in a smoothie, I couldn’t peel it because the peel was frozen! I let it thaw but then it became a mushy mess of a banana. Live and learn.

Archer Farms Simply Balanced Berry Blend Low-Fat Granola

I had a serving of this yummy cereal with a splash of almond milk and I was good the rest of the night thank goodness!

I am feeling TONS better this morning. I got a really good nights sleep and am ready to take on the day!  I am planning on a long cardio session at the gym this morning and then I have to complete the “grocery project” this afternoon. I wanted to try and wait until Friday to go but we are running out of everything!  You should see the creative lunch I put together for my children!

Side Note:

I have a love affair with my iPhone.  I don’t know how I ever lived without it and these are two things that are making my life better right now.
